Customer : Airvana Industry : Wireless Broadband Application Name: AirVista
Business Challenge
Airvana provides wireless operators with end-to-end All-IP radio
access infrastructure based on 3G, 1xEV-DO high-speed mobile data
standards. For the service provides to quickly roll out services
using Airvanas IP radio access network infrastructure, a rugged
and scalable central management system that can enable anytimeanywhere
configuration, control, and monitoring of Airvana RAN elements becomes
a critical necessity.
Airvana was looking for ways to build a management software that
adds manageability to its existing line of radio access infrastructure
products. The software was also expected to accelerate the integration
of the systems and applications required with its radio access network
deployments. Since Airvanas solutions were to be installed
with existing infrastructure, this was a critical decision-influencing
factor for its customers.
Moreover, the management system was expected to possess highend
network management capabilities such as fault, performance, configuration,
security, topology map with GIS support, and auto-discovery of Airvanas
IP-RAN devices. Open standardsbased interfaces to integrate with
OSS and other applications at the service providers end were also a critical requirement.
Solution:
Airvana selected WebNMSs network management platform,
WebNMS Framework, for its management software development project.
The open, standards based architecture of AdventNet’s Web NMS, its scalability, and comprehensive management functionalities were the main factors influencing our selection said
Amit Jain, Senior Product
Manager.
AirVista the WebNMS Framework based management system of Airvana was created
to address the following key requirements: -
anytime-anywhere configuration, control, and monitoring of Airvana
RAN elements over an IP network
ability to integrate with operators' existing Operational Support
Systems (OSSs) using open, standards-based interfaces
easy to use and easy to learn web-based clients
Scalable and rugged application
WebNMS Framework provided hooks for all the above mentioned requirements
with its out-of-the-box FCPS functionalities, open standard northbound interface support, and
intuitive GUI.
Airvana supplies AirVista to its OEM customers, Nortel Networks
and Ericsson, who have deployed AirVista at several major CDMA operators
worldwide.
Key Features of AirVista:
Web-based remote management of the access networks
Supports open-standards and interfaces: SNMP, HTTP, XML, Java
RMI, and Telnet/CLI.
Comprehensive FCAPS functions
Web-based AirVista clients (HTML, Java applet, and Java application)
run in standard browsers (IE and
Netscape) and feature a familiar GUI
Automatic alarm, status, and configuration information synchronization
with the NEs
Active device panel views show Airvana NEs graphically with
live status of all major components
Key Benefits:
The following are the key benefits that WebNMS Framework brought
forth with AirVista:
Reduced development time: The development time for developing
a comprehensive, scalable and rugged EMS application for the Airvana
IP Infrastructure was substantially reduced with WebNMS Framework. It was
estimated that such a development in-house would have taken about
twice as much time.
Cost-efficiency: Using WebNMS Framework, Airvana was able to control
costs on the development and production of the management application
which it has been able to pass on to its customers and retained
its competitive edge.
All IP based Management: One of the key requirements for the
management application was to enable secure ubiquitous access
to the application across an IP network for easy monitoring and
configuration. Leveraging the underlying technology of
WebNMS Framework enabled this.
Deployment Ease: Airvana's requirements included a seamless
and easy deployment procedure to enable deployment across geographies
with minimal skills. This was key in enabling service providers
enmbrace the revolutionary technology that Airvana offered. WebNMS Framework brought in this critical edge, allowing Airvista to be widely
deployed across service provider's locations.
Simple Operations: Web-based AirVista enabled simple and easy
navigation of the application, which ensured that the system was
easy to use by operators without demanding additional skill sets.
