Business Challenge

Net Insight is a leading multi-service networking equipment vendor developing next generation SDH/Sonet networking equipment that combines 100% QoS with highest network utilization and multicast. Net Insight's offerings reduce providers' CAPEX and OPEX, which protect and enhance their existing infrastructure investment, while providing the ability to launch new revenuegenerating services. But for cutting cost on OPEX, Net Insight had to offer a management software that provides visual representation of the entire network, status of the devices in the network, 24x7 health and availability monitoring of the devices etc., enabling quicker fault detection and troubleshooting to minimize network downtime. Net Insight was clearly aware of the productivity benefits offered by such management tools.

One option for Net Insight was to suggest their customers to buying 3rd party network infrastructure management tools available in the market. Though Net Insight's devices could be managed using such tools, they add significant overall cost burden to the customers. Moreover, providers have to configure the devices as part of the ongoing service provisioning activities and submit reports to key customers for compliance to service level agreements. It is a time consuming as well as high cost involved attempt to make these 3rd party tools configure Net Insight's devices and generate specific reports that are unique to Net Insight devices. And not having a software that bears the same badge as of the networking equipment could potentially reduce the perceived quality of the Net Insight's solution as a whole.

The challenge for the node and network management team at Net Insight, headed by Jan Burgos (Technology Manager, Net Insight) was to look for a cost-effective way to develop a network management software inhouse bearing the Net Insight badge, with all the desired features included.

Having decided that they want to build a software on their own, bearing their badge, the team at Net Insight had to decide on two different paths. Either they set up a huge development team and build the software from scratch or they buy a generic network management platform, such as WebNMS Framework, and build their device specific capabilities over the framework.

Both the options had their own advantages and disadvantages. Building the software inhouse would give Net Insight better control over the software, but would affect really badly on all other aspects such as cost, time-to-market, and quality. Moreover a portion of Net Insight's energy would be spent on getting this software ready and in maintaining it throughout its life cycle. Building the software on top of a framework would help Net Insight reach the market quickly, invest less resources, and also remain focused on the core business functions.

Solution

Net Insight chose WebNMS Framework as the platform for building their management software.

The development tools of WebNMS helped the Net Insight team customize the framework with ease. Moreover, the technical support offered by WebNMS Framework enabled a hassle-free development experience for the Net Insight team.

Nimbra Vision had all the features that Net Insight originally had thought of. It managed the entire suite of Nimbra products providing automatic discovery, 24x7 availability and health monitoring, configuration, and detailed report generation capabilities.
